Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
