Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state preliminary tests show the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.

An important official commented the attack made him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
